At which French abbey did Coco Chanel spend part of her childhood?

The story behind the answer

Coco Chanel spent part of her childhood at Aubazine Abbey in central France.

After her mother died in 1895, Chanel’s father sent Gabrielle and her sisters to the Congregation of the Sacred Heart of Mary. Gabrielle was later placed at the convent school at Aubazine, a former Cistercian abbey in Corrèze.

The austere environment became an important part of the mythology surrounding Chanel’s visual language. The abbey’s geometric architecture, restrained interiors and monochrome atmosphere are often connected with motifs later associated with her work, including black-and-white contrast and simple, disciplined lines.

Some accounts also link the interlocking-C logo to Aubazine’s stained-glass windows, but that origin is not established as a definitive fact. Chanel’s later designs drew on many influences, so the abbey should be treated as context rather than a single proven source for every signature detail.
