Japan’s World War II surrender ceremony in China was held at Nanjing on 9 September 1945.
The ceremony took place in the auditorium of the Central Army Military Academy in Nanjing, then part of the Republic of China. General Yasuji Okamura signed the surrender document for the Japanese forces in China.
Kuomintang General He Yingqin accepted the surrender on behalf of the Allied Powers and the Republic of China’s National Revolutionary Army. The document was written in both Japanese and Chinese, and the ceremony lasted about 15 minutes.
This event followed the larger surrender ceremony aboard USS Missouri by one week. It dealt specifically with Japanese forces in the China theater, showing how Japan’s capitulation was implemented through multiple regional ceremonies rather than a single event alone.
