At which château is Pablo Picasso buried?
Answer
Château of Vauvenargues
Answer
Château of Vauvenargues
Pablo Picasso is buried at the Château of Vauvenargues in southern France.
Picasso bought the fortified château in September 1958 and used it as a residence and studio during his later career. It stands in the village of Vauvenargues, near Aix-en-Provence and the Montagne Sainte-Victoire, a landscape strongly associated with the painter Paul Cézanne.
Picasso died at his villa in Mougins on 8 April 1973. Although he had lived there, local authorities did not permit his burial in Mougins, so his wife Jacqueline chose the grounds of Vauvenargues. Picasso was buried there on 16 April 1973, beneath a grassy mound in front of the château.
The grave is marked by *La Femme au vase*—also translated as *Woman with a Vase*—a monumental sculpture Picasso had made in 1933. Jacqueline was later buried beside him. The château remains private property, so it is not the same as a conventional public museum or memorial site.
