At which bridge was John the Fearless assassinated in 1419?

John the Fearless was assassinated on the bridge at Montereau in 1419. The Duke of Burgundy was killed on 10 September during a tense meeting with the Dauphin Charles, the future Charles VII, in the town of Montereau-Fault-Yonne.

The meeting was intended to reconcile the Burgundian and Armagnac factions, whose rivalry had fractured France during the wider Hundred Years’ War. John and Charles met inside a guarded enclosure on the bridge over the Seine, with each side bringing an escort. Suspicion and hostility quickly overwhelmed the peace talks, and men accompanying the Dauphin attacked the duke.

John’s murder had consequences far beyond the immediate political feud. His son, Philip the Good, inherited Burgundy and allied himself with the English. That alliance strengthened the Anglo-Burgundian position and contributed directly to the Treaty of Troyes in 1420, which favored the English succession to the French crown.
