At which Berlin landmark does Germany hold a major public New Year's Eve celebration?

The story behind the answer

Germany holds a major public New Year’s Eve celebration at Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate.

The gate forms the visual center of a large open-air event on Straße des 17. Juni, the avenue running west from central Berlin. Concerts, stage performances, food stalls, and fireworks have made the location one of Germany’s most recognizable places to welcome the new year.

The Brandenburg Gate was completed in 1791 and became a national symbol through Berlin’s changing political history. It stood near the former Berlin Wall and became especially associated with reunification after the wall fell in 1989. New Year’s Eve crowds gather there because the landmark combines a historic setting with a broad ceremonial avenue suitable for a large public festival.
