Battle of Mactan
Answer
Battle of Mactan
Ferdinand Magellan was killed at the Battle of Mactan in 1521.
The battle took place on 27 April 1521 on Mactan Island in the Philippines. Magellan, commanding a small force allied with Rajah Humabon of Cebu, attempted to compel the local ruler Lapulapu to recognize Spanish authority. Lapulapu refused, and his warriors resisted the landing force.
The Europeans faced difficult conditions: a reef kept their ships’ firearms too far from the shore, while the shallow water and large number of defenders disrupted the attack. Magellan’s men were heavily equipped, but their armor left their legs vulnerable. Magellan was wounded and surrounded during the fighting, then killed by Mactan warriors.
Magellan did not complete the first circumnavigation of Earth. His expedition continued under other commanders, especially Juan Sebastián Elcano, and the ship Victoria returned to Spain in 1522. Cajamarca belongs to the Spanish conquest of the Inca Empire, Lepanto was a 1571 naval battle, and Diu was a separate Portuguese-Indian Ocean conflict.
