At which battle did British General Cornwallis surrender to George Washington in 1781?

The story behind the answer

British General Cornwallis surrendered at the Battle of Yorktown in 1781.

The Siege of Yorktown took place in Virginia from September 28 to October 19, 1781. American forces under George Washington and French forces commanded by the Comte de Rochambeau surrounded the British army, while a French fleet blocked British assistance by sea.

Cornwallis surrendered his army on October 19. He did not personally appear at the surrender ceremony, reportedly citing illness; Brigadier General Charles O’Hara surrendered on his behalf. The British defeat effectively ended major fighting in North America, although the war continued formally until the Treaty of Paris in 1783.

Yorktown was possible because American and French land forces coordinated with French naval power. The victory strengthened the political case for peace and helped bring the British government to negotiate American independence.
