At which 1781 battle did the British army under Cornwallis surrender to American and French forces?
Answer
Battle of Yorktown
Answer
Battle of Yorktown
The British army under Charles Cornwallis surrendered at the Battle of Yorktown in Virginia in 1781. The surrender on October 19 ended the decisive siege of the American Revolutionary War.
George Washington commanded the Continental Army, while French troops under the Comte de Rochambeau joined the American force. A French fleet under the Comte de Grasse blocked British naval relief in the Chesapeake Bay, helping trap Cornwallis’s army on the Yorktown peninsula.
American and French forces completed the siege after weeks of bombardment and captured key British defenses, including Redoubts 9 and 10. Cornwallis claimed illness and sent General Charles O’Hara to surrender in his place.
Yorktown did not immediately end all fighting, but it made a continued British war effort politically difficult. Formal peace negotiations followed, leading to the Treaty of Paris in 1783.
