At which 1777 battles did British General John Burgoyne surrender his army to American forces?

The story behind the answer

British General John Burgoyne surrendered his army at the 1777 Battles of Saratoga.

The Battles of Saratoga were fought near Saratoga, New York, on September 19 and October 7, 1777. They formed the decisive part of a British campaign intended to control the Hudson River Valley and separate New England from the other American colonies.

The first battle, Freeman’s Farm, produced heavy fighting without ending the campaign. The second, Bemis Heights, brought an American victory and left Burgoyne’s force surrounded and short of support. Burgoyne surrendered his army to American General Horatio Gates on October 17, 1777.

Saratoga is often described as a major turning point in the American Revolutionary War because the victory encouraged France to enter the conflict as an American ally. It is distinct from Yorktown, where Lord Cornwallis surrendered in 1781, and from Bunker Hill, an earlier battle that ended in a British tactical victory.
