Operation Coronet, the second phase of the planned invasion of Japan, was tentatively scheduled to begin on March 1, 1946.
Coronet would have followed Operation Olympic, the planned invasion of southern Kyushu scheduled for November 1, 1945. Coronet targeted the Kantō Plain on Honshu, south of Tokyo. The First Army was expected to land at Kujūkuri Beach, while the Eighth Army was planned to land near Hiratsuka on Sagami Bay.
The operation was designed to bring a much larger force against Japan’s main island. Up to 45 U.S. divisions were assigned to the initial landing and follow-up stages, compared with the 12 divisions used in the initial Normandy landings. British Commonwealth forces were also considered for later reinforcement.
Coronet never occurred. Japan’s acceptance of surrender terms in August 1945 and the formal signing on September 2 ended the need for the invasion plan. March 1 was a projected date, not a date on which combat began.
