At what Indiana high school did Edwin Hubble teach?
Answer
New Albany High School
Answer
New Albany High School
Edwin Hubble taught at New Albany High School in New Albany, Indiana.
After studying at the University of Chicago and earning a degree from Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar, Hubble returned to the United States following his father’s death in 1913. Although he had trained in law, he was not drawn to practicing it. Instead, he accepted a teaching position at New Albany High School.
Hubble taught Spanish, physics, and mathematics there, and he also coached the boys’ basketball team. The job lasted about a year, but it was an important transitional period: it supported him financially while bringing him back toward the scientific interests he had pursued earlier. He soon resumed graduate work in astronomy at the University of Chicago’s Yerkes Observatory.
The school is sometimes confused with a generic “Indiana high school” or with institutions named Central, Jefferson, or Bloomington. New Albany High School is the specific school identified in biographical accounts. Hubble’s later career was far removed from classroom teaching: at Mount Wilson, he used powerful telescopes to establish that galaxies exist beyond the Milky Way and to study their motions.
