At what age is a traditional quinceañera celebrated?

The story behind the answer

A traditional quinceañera is celebrated when a girl turns 15.

The Spanish word quinceañera refers both to the celebrant and, commonly, to the birthday celebration itself. The number 15 is central because the event marks a girl’s transition from childhood toward young womanhood. In many families, the celebration combines a religious service, a formal presentation, music, dancing, and a large reception.

The custom is especially associated with Latin American communities and their diasporas, including families in the United States. Practices vary considerably by country, religion, family, and budget. Some celebrations emphasize Catholic traditions, while others are secular. The event is not legally required and does not itself change a person’s legal status; it is a cultural rite of passage. A related term, quince años, literally means “15 years” and is widely used for the celebration in parts of Latin America.
