A quinceañera traditionally celebrates a girl’s 15th birthday.
The Spanish word quince means “fifteen,” and the celebration centers on the transition associated with reaching that age. In many families, the event combines birthday festivities with formal introductions, symbolic presentations, music, food, and dancing.
The tradition is not identical everywhere. Some families emphasize a religious service, while others hold a secular ceremony or a large reception. Customs also vary according to country, family background, and personal preference.
A quinceañera is therefore both the celebrant and, by common usage, the celebration itself. It should not be confused with a universal legal adulthood ceremony: turning 15 does not create the same legal status in every country.
