At the end of their train ride, Roland and his ka-tet find themselves in Topeka, Kansas, in the aftermath of a devastating world epidemic. This occurs in Stephen King’s The Dark Tower III: The Waste Lands, after the ka-tet defeats Blaine the Mono.

Blaine’s high-speed journey ends in an alternate version of Topeka rather than the ordinary Kansas city known from our world. The landscape is largely empty, and signs of the superflu called Captain Trips reveal that this reality has been devastated by disease. The setting connects The Dark Tower mythology with King’s broader multiverse of parallel worlds.
