At the end of their fight with the “wolves,” Roland and his group discover that the beings are robots. The Wolves of Thunderclap are technological entities disguised with masks and wolf-like appearances, rather than living wolf-men or magical creatures.
Roland explains the truth to his attack team before the battle. The Wolves use advanced weapons, including devices resembling lightsabers and flying snitches, reinforcing their mechanical origin. Their appearance is designed to make them seem monstrous and frightening to the people of Calla Bryn Sturgis.
The revelation also connects the Wolves to the wider technological remnants of the Dark Tower world. Andy, the town’s messenger, is himself a humanoid robot and secretly works as an emissary for the Wolves. After the battle, the gunslingers kill all the Wolves while suffering only limited losses.
“Cyborgs” is therefore not the precise answer. The book describes the mysterious attackers as robots, making that the canonical answer.
