The Taco Bell Skills Challenge tested dribbling, passing, shooting, and speed. The 2018 field used a bracket that separated guards from frontcourt players before bringing the winners together in the final. Dinwiddie represented the guard side, while Markkanen advanced through the big-man bracket.

Dinwiddie's victory was notable because the Skills Challenge had recently favored taller players. Kristaps Porzingis had won in 2017, and Karl-Anthony Towns won in 2016. Dinwiddie became the first guard to win the event since the format began emphasizing matchups between guards and big men.
