Charles Cornwallis was the British general who surrendered after the Franco-American victory at the 1781 Siege of Yorktown.

Cornwallis commanded the British army defending Yorktown, Virginia. General George Washington’s Continental Army and French forces led by the Comte de Rochambeau surrounded the position, while a French naval victory in the Chesapeake prevented effective British relief.

Cornwallis requested surrender terms on October 17, 1781, and the formal surrender took place on October 19. He did not attend the ceremony, claiming illness; Brigadier General Charles O’Hara represented him and presented the sword to American Major General Benjamin Lincoln.

Yorktown was the final major land engagement of the American Revolutionary War. Fighting continued elsewhere, especially at sea, but the defeat led to peace negotiations and the Treaty of Paris in 1783.
