Big Ben strikes midnight for London's New Year's Eve celebration.
Big Ben is the nickname commonly used for the Great Bell of the Palace of Westminster, while the clock tower itself has officially been called Elizabeth Tower since 2012. The bell's midnight chimes are broadcast as London welcomes the new year, making the sound one of the event's most familiar symbols.
London's modern public celebration also features a large fireworks display along the River Thames. The fireworks are staged around landmarks including the London Eye and are watched by crowds along the river as well as television audiences.
A common mix-up is calling the entire clock tower Big Ben. Technically, Big Ben is the great bell inside the tower, although everyday usage often applies the name to the tower or clock. The tower's clock began keeping time in 1859.
