At a quinceañera, what ceremony may take place in a Catholic church before the reception?

The story behind the answer

At a quinceañera, a Catholic Mass may take place before the reception.

This service is often called a quinceañera Mass or a thanksgiving Mass. In Spanish-speaking Catholic communities, it can provide a religious setting in which the celebrant gives thanks and receives a blessing as she reaches her fifteenth birthday.

The religious service is common but not universal. Quinceañeras are also celebrated by families who are not Catholic, by families who prefer a nonreligious ceremony, and by families whose local customs do not include a church service. The reception and other traditions can therefore exist independently of Mass.

A quinceañera Mass is not the same sacrament as baptism, confirmation, or marriage. Its purpose is generally thanksgiving and blessing rather than initiation into the church or the creation of a marital relationship. The exact prayers, music, and participation rules depend on the parish and family.
