Around what year was the Great Pyramid completed?
Answer
2560 BC
Answer
2560 BC
Around 2560 BC, the Great Pyramid was completed.
Built for Pharaoh Khufu, the pyramid was the largest monument in the ancient world. It originally stood about 146.6 metres tall, though the pyramidion and most polished Tura limestone casing have disappeared. Its construction formed part of a vast funerary complex at Giza, including temples, a causeway, subsidiary pyramids and elite tombs.
The date is an estimate rather than a recorded completion day. Egyptologists place Khufu’s reign in the 26th century BC, using archaeological evidence, historical king lists and radiocarbon studies. Construction may have taken roughly two decades, though estimates vary.
A common mix-up is confusing the Great Pyramid with the slightly younger Pyramid of Khafre, which still preserves casing stones near its summit. The Great Pyramid was the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World to survive substantially intact.
