Arlanda Airport is the main international airport serving Stockholm, the capital of Sweden.
Officially called Stockholm Arlanda Airport, it is Sweden’s largest airport and the country’s principal gateway for international air travel. The airport is located in Sigtuna Municipality, about 37 kilometres north of central Stockholm, rather than within Stockholm’s city centre itself. Its location places it in Stockholm County, near the route between Stockholm and Uppsala.
Arlanda opened on 1 April 1962 and has several passenger terminals and three runways. It serves as an important base or hub for airlines including Scandinavian Airlines and Norwegian Air Shuttle. High-speed rail and other ground links connect it with Stockholm.
The question can cause confusion because Stockholm is also associated with Bromma and Skavsta airports. Those airports serve particular routes and markets, but Arlanda is the main international airport for the Stockholm metropolitan area. Helsinki, Copenhagen and Oslo each have their own major international airports in Finland, Denmark and Norway.
