Answer
comfort food
Apple pie is often considered a comfort food in English-speaking countries. The label reflects its familiar, home-style associations as much as its role as a sweet dessert.
Apple pie has a long history in English-speaking food cultures. An English recipe collection called the Forme of Cury, compiled in the 14th century, included apples with spices and other fruit in a pastry casing. Later versions developed distinctive regional styles, from English double-crust pies to American lattice-topped pies and Dutch crumb- or lattice-topped appeltaart.
“Comfort food” does not mean apple pie is a formal category with one fixed recipe. It describes food connected with familiarity, nostalgia, warmth, and emotional reassurance. Apple pie may be served hot or cold, alone or with custard, cream, ice cream, or—in parts of the United States and northern England—cheese. A common mix-up is treating “American” as the dish’s origin: the pie became a powerful American cultural symbol, but apple pie traditions also came through England, the Netherlands, and Sweden.
