An archipelago of 169 Pacific islands known as the “Friendly Islands,” Tonga has Nukuʻalofa as its capital city.
Nukuʻalofa is located on the northern coast of Tongatapu, Tonga’s main island. It is the country’s largest city and its political, economic, and administrative center.
The city became Tonga’s formal capital under the 1875 Constitution. Government offices, Parliament, and the Royal Palace are located in or near Nukuʻalofa.
The name is often written with the Tongan ʻokina, as Nukuʻalofa. Simplified spellings such as Nukualofa also appear, but “Nukʻalofa” omits part of the standard spelling.
