Amman is the capital of which country?

Amman is the capital of Jordan. It is the country’s largest city and its main political, economic, and cultural center.

The city has an unusually long history. The earliest settlement evidence in the wider Amman area includes Ain Ghazal, dating to the eighth millennium BC. In the Iron Age, Amman was known as Rabbath Ammon and served as the capital of the Ammonite Kingdom. The Ptolemaic ruler Ptolemy II Philadelphus later renamed it Philadelphia, a name used during its Greco-Roman period.

The ancient name returned in the Islamic era, and modern Amman began expanding after Circassian settlers arrived in the late 19th century. The Hejaz Railway reached the city in 1904, helping stimulate growth. In 1921, Abdullah I selected Amman as the capital of the Emirate of Transjordan; after Jordan became independent in 1946, it remained the national capital.

Amman is famous for its hills: the historic core was traditionally described as occupying seven, although the modern city stretches across many more.
