Against which team did Lionel Messi make his La Liga debut?

The story behind the answer

Lionel Messi made his La Liga debut against Espanyol. On 16 October 2004, the 17-year-old came on for Barcelona in a league match against their city rivals at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys in Montjuïc. The appearance marked the beginning of his long competitive career with Barcelona’s senior team.

Messi had already made his first-team debut in a friendly against Porto in November 2003, but that match was not a La Liga fixture. His Espanyol appearance was therefore the milestone that established him as a top-flight Spanish league player. At the time, he became Barcelona’s youngest player to appear in an official competition.

His first La Liga goal came later in the 2004–05 season, on 1 May 2005, against Albacete. Barcelona won the league that season, giving Messi his first senior domestic title. He went on to become La Liga’s record goalscorer and one of the defining players in the competition’s history.
