Against which player did Roger Federer win his first ATP title at Milan in 2001?

The story behind the answer

Roger Federer won his first ATP title at Milan in 2001 by defeating Julien Boutter.

The final took place at the 2001 Milan Indoor tournament in Italy, where Federer prevailed 6–4, 6–7(7), 6–4. The victory came on 4 February 2001, when Federer was 19 years old, and ended a wait that had included two lost ATP finals in 2000 at Marseille and Basel.

Federer’s route to the trophy included victories over former world No. 1 Yevgeny Kafelnikov and 1990 Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanisevic. Boutter, a French player with a powerful serve, pushed Federer through a tense second-set tie-break before Federer recovered to close out the match.

The Milan trophy was the first of 103 tour-level singles titles Federer would eventually win. It was also his only ATP title of 2001, although that season later included his breakthrough victory over Pete Sampras at Wimbledon.
