Against which player did Roger Federer lose the 2008 Wimbledon final?

The story behind the answer

Roger Federer lost the 2008 Wimbledon final to Rafael Nadal.

The match on 6 July 2008 was the third consecutive Wimbledon final between Federer and Nadal. Federer had won their 2006 and 2007 finals, and entered the 2008 championship as the five-time defending champion.

Nadal won the dramatic five-set contest 6–4, 6–4, 6–7, 6–7, 9–7, despite Federer recovering to take the third and fourth sets in tiebreaks. The match lasted 4 hours and 48 minutes and included two rain delays.

A common mix-up is confusing this defeat with Federer’s 2019 Wimbledon final loss to Novak Djokovic. Nadal’s victory ended Federer’s 65-match winning streak on grass and completed Nadal’s first French Open–Wimbledon Channel Slam.
