Pelé scored a hat-trick against France in the 1958 World Cup semifinal. Brazil won the match 5–2 on 24 June 1958 at Råsunda Stadium in Solna, Sweden.
The match was tied 1–1 for much of the first half, but Pelé scored three times after the interval. His goals helped Brazil pull away and reach its first World Cup final. France’s Just Fontaine scored one of his team’s goals, adding to the tournament record that eventually made him the competition’s top scorer with 13 goals.
Pelé’s hat-trick made him the youngest player to score three times in a World Cup match. He was 17 years old, and the performance confirmed the promise he had shown after entering Brazil’s team for the final group match against the Soviet Union.
