Against which club did Ronaldo score his FIFA Puskás Award-winning goal?

The story behind the answer

Cristiano Ronaldo scored his FIFA Puskás Award-winning goal against Porto.

The goal came for Manchester United in the second leg of the 2008–09 UEFA Champions League quarter-final on 15 April 2009. From roughly 40 yards, Ronaldo struck a fierce, dipping right-footed shot that flew beyond Porto goalkeeper Helton. It was the only goal of the match and sent United through 3–2 on aggregate.

FIFA later selected the strike as the inaugural Puskás Award winner, an honour created to recognise the year’s most aesthetically significant goal. Ronaldo received the award at the 2009 FIFA World Player of the Year Gala and said the goal was the best he had ever scored.

The answer is sometimes confused with Roma, Arsenal or Benfica because those clubs also appeared in Ronaldo’s Champions League career. Porto is the key opponent here: the goal was scored at the Estádio do Dragão, against his former Portuguese club’s senior side, and it directly decided the quarter-final second leg.
