After Pandora opened her container, hope remained inside according to the Greek myth. Hesiod names the surviving force elpis, commonly translated as hope.
The story says that evils escaped into the world when the container was opened, while hope stayed within it. The ending has prompted long discussion because readers disagree about whether hope is presented as a comfort, a further burden, or an ambiguous part of human life.
The myth does not simply say that Pandora released “everything bad” in a modern, casual sense. Hesiod lists forms of suffering and hardship, and the exact interpretation of elpis depends partly on translation and context.
Despite that complexity, “hope remained” is the standard answer in popular retellings. It is also the source of the familiar idea that hope survives even amid widespread suffering.
