Accra is the capital of Ghana.

The city lies on Ghana’s southern coast along the Gulf of Guinea and is the country’s largest urban and administrative centre. Accra houses Ghana’s national government, major businesses, universities, cultural institutions, and international transport links. It is also the centre of the wider Greater Accra metropolitan area, which extends well beyond the formal municipal boundary.

Accra became the capital of the British Gold Coast in 1877, replacing Cape Coast. Its relatively dry coastal climate was one reason British administrators preferred it. When Ghana became independent on March 6, 1957, Accra remained the national capital and became a major symbol of African decolonization.

The city grew from several coastal settlements and trading communities connected with European forts, including James Fort, Ussher Fort, and Christiansborg Castle. The name is associated with the Ga people, whose communities have long inhabited the region.

A frequent mix-up is Cape Coast, which was an earlier colonial capital and remains an important historic city, but Ghana’s present-day capital is Accra.
