Hope remained inside after the troubles escaped from Pandora’s vessel in the best-known version of the myth.
The story says that Pandora opened the container and released forms of suffering into the human world. Before hope could leave, the vessel was closed again, leaving hope inside. This ending has generated centuries of debate because readers disagree about whether hope is presented as a comfort, another burden, or a divine restraint.
The Greek word traditionally translated as “hope” is elpis. The ancient account does not simply provide a modern inspirational slogan; its meaning depends on how the poem treats suffering, expectation, and Zeus’s intentions.
Popular retellings often say Pandora “let hope out,” but the familiar version says hope remained within the vessel.
