According to Hesiod, which god made Pandora from earth?

The story behind the answer

According to Hesiod, Hephaestus made Pandora from earth.

In Works and Days, Zeus orders Hephaestus to fashion a woman from earth and water. Hephaestus was the Greek god of fire, metalworking, craft, and smithing, so the creation scene connects Pandora with divine workmanship rather than ordinary human birth.

Other gods then contribute qualities or gifts to the newly formed woman. This sequence explains the name Pandora, often understood as “all-gifted” or “the giver of all.” The myth is not a single act by Hephaestus alone: he creates the form, while other deities add attributes.

Later summaries sometimes describe Pandora simply as being created by the gods. Hesiod’s account is more specific, naming Hephaestus as the craftsman responsible for shaping her from earth.
