According to Greek mythology, who made Pandora’s body from clay?

The story behind the answer

According to Greek mythology, Hephaestus made Pandora’s body from clay.

Hephaestus was the Olympian god of metalworking, fire, craftsmanship, and forging. In Hesiod’s account, Zeus instructed him to shape the first woman from earth. Other gods then contributed qualities, adornments, or abilities, completing the figure who became Pandora.

This creation episode is distinct from the later opening of the jar. Pandora is fashioned as part of Zeus’s response to Prometheus’s theft of fire, and the gods’ contributions explain why her name refers to being “all-gifted.” Different translations describe the material as earth, clay, or a mixture associated with earth.

Hephaestus is sometimes confused with Prometheus because both figures are connected with fire, but their roles differ: Hephaestus crafts Pandora, while Prometheus gives fire to humans.
