According to Greek mythology, which figure was Pandora’s husband?
Answer
Epimetheus
Answer
Epimetheus
According to Greek mythology, Pandora’s husband was Epimetheus.
Epimetheus was a Titan associated with hindsight and afterthought. His name is commonly contrasted with that of his brother Prometheus, whose name is linked with forethought. In Hesiod’s account, Prometheus warns Epimetheus not to accept gifts from Zeus, but Epimetheus ignores the warning when Pandora arrives.
Pandora’s marriage to Epimetheus connects the story to the wider mythic history of humanity. Prometheus had taken fire from the gods and given it to humans, angering Zeus. Pandora’s arrival and the opening of the jar follow as part of Zeus’s response.
Epimetheus is sometimes mistakenly identified as Pandora’s brother or as the hero who opened the container. Neither is correct in the standard Hesiodic narrative. Prometheus is Pandora’s brother-in-law, while Epimetheus is the figure who receives her as a wife and lives with the consequences of the divine plan.
