According to Genesis, what wood was Noah instructed to use to build the Ark?

The story behind the answer

According to Genesis, Noah was instructed to build the Ark from gopher wood.

Genesis 6:14 gives the instruction while describing the Ark’s construction: Noah is told to make it from “gopher wood” and coat it inside and outside with pitch. The Hebrew term appears only here in the Bible, so its precise botanical meaning is uncertain.

Some translations retain “gopher wood,” while others have proposed “resinous wood” or “cypress wood.” These alternatives reflect translation theories rather than a universally established identification. The text itself supplies the distinctive phrase “gopher wood.”

The same passage also gives the Ark’s dimensions and compartments. The material, waterproofing, and internal divisions are presented as part of the divine instructions Noah follows before the Flood narrative continues.
