According to Genesis, what was the Ark’s stated width?

The story behind the answer

According to Genesis, the Ark’s stated width was fifty cubits.

Genesis 6:15 records the Ark as 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high. Since the cubit was an ancient measurement rather than a fixed modern unit, the width cannot be converted with complete precision. Common estimates place 50 cubits at approximately 22 to 23 metres, though the result varies by the cubit standard assumed.

These figures describe the Ark as a broad, box-like vessel. Its length-to-width ratio was 6:1, while its length-to-height ratio was 10:1. The text also says that the Ark had three decks, suggesting that its capacity came partly from its substantial internal volume.

The dimensions are presented in the flood narrative as divine instructions to Noah. They should not be confused with later proposed dimensions for replicas, which may use different cubit lengths or alter the biblical proportions. Genesis gives no modern shipbuilding terminology or detailed construction drawings.
