According to Genesis, what was Noah’s name before he built the Ark?

The story behind the answer

According to Genesis, the man who built the Ark was named Noah.

Genesis introduces Noah as a descendant of Adam through the line of Seth and describes him as righteous in his generation. God then instructs him to build the ark and preserve his household, along with representatives of the animal world, from the coming flood.

Noah’s three sons are named Shem, Ham, and Japheth. They are important figures in the flood account, but none of them is the ark’s builder. After the flood, Noah leaves the ark, builds an altar, and receives a covenant symbolized by the rainbow.

Noah is also a major figure in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, although the details and emphasis vary among their scriptures and traditions. In the Hebrew Bible and Christian Old Testament, the ark narrative appears in Genesis chapters 6–9. The name “Noah” should not be confused with the names of his sons or with later flood heroes from other ancient cultures.
