According to Buddhist tradition, the Buddha’s son was named Rahula.
Rahula was the son of Siddhartha Gautama and Yasodhara. Buddhist biographies say he was born around the time Siddhartha left the palace to seek liberation. The name Rahula is often explained in traditional sources as meaning a fetter, reflecting Siddhartha’s feelings about family attachment before his renunciation.
After the Buddha returned to Kapilavastu, Rahula became a novice in the Buddhist monastic community. He is traditionally regarded as the first novice monk, or samanera, in the Buddhist tradition. The Buddha’s teachings to Rahula are preserved in several discourses, including advice about truthfulness and careful self-examination.
Rahula is sometimes confused with Ananda, who was the Buddha’s cousin and attendant, or with Devadatta, another relative. Rahula’s mother is traditionally identified as Yasodhara, while his grandfather was King Suddhodana.
