According to Buddhist tradition, in which city did the Buddha die and enter parinirvana?

The story behind the answer

According to Buddhist tradition, the Buddha died and entered parinirvana at Kushinagar.

Kushinagar, known in ancient sources as Kushinara, was associated with the Malla people in the region of present-day Uttar Pradesh, India. Buddhist accounts say the Buddha lay between two sal trees and gave final instructions to the monastic community before passing away at the age of 80.

The event is called parinirvana, indicating the final passing of one who has achieved nirvana and will not undergo further rebirth. The Mahaparinibbana Sutta is the principal early text describing the Buddha’s final journey, last teachings, death, cremation, and the distribution of relics.

Kushinagar is one of the four major Buddhist pilgrimage sites, alongside Lumbini, Bodh Gaya, and Sarnath. It should not be confused with Sarnath, where the Buddha first taught, or Bodh Gaya, where he attained enlightenment.
