According to Buddhist tradition, Gautama Buddha was 80 years old when he died at Kushinagar.
Buddhist sources describe the Buddha as living for roughly 80 years. After decades of teaching across northern India, he became seriously ill while traveling with his disciples. He reached Kushinagar, where he lay between two sala trees and entered parinirvana.
The age refers to the traditional chronology of his life, not a date established by contemporary records. Scholars disagree about the exact years of his birth and death, because the earliest Buddhist texts do not provide a modern-style biography or universally agreed calendar dates.
This age is also distinct from the traditional age of 35, when Siddhartha Gautama attained awakening. Buddhist tradition therefore presents a teaching career of about 45 years between enlightenment and final parinirvana.
