Who was named "People" magazine's Sexiest Man Alive in 1996?

People magazine named Denzel Washington its Sexiest Man Alive in 1996. He was 41 at the time and became the first Black man to receive the magazine’s annual honor.

Washington was already an acclaimed actor, known for films including Glory, Malcolm X, Philadelphia, and Crimson Tide. The recognition reflected his leading-man status as well as his combination of screen charisma, dramatic range, and widespread popularity.

A common mix-up is the surrounding years: Brad Pitt held the title in 1995, while George Clooney received it in 1997. People also did not select an individual Sexiest Man Alive in 1993; Richard Gere and Cindy Crawford were named “Sexiest Couple Alive” instead.

The title began in 1985, when Mel Gibson became the first recipient. Washington’s 1996 selection remains a notable milestone in the award’s history and helped broaden the image of who could represent People’s idealized leading man.
