Which continent has parts in all four hemispheres?

The story behind the answer

Which continent has parts in all four hemispheres? Africa does. It is the only continent whose land lies north and south of the Equator and east and west of the Prime Meridian.

The Equator crosses central Africa, passing through countries including Gabon, the Republic of the Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, Kenya and Somalia. This places part of the continent in the Northern Hemisphere and part in the Southern Hemisphere. The Prime Meridian crosses western Africa, including Algeria, Mali, Burkina Faso, Togo and Ghana, dividing African territory between the Eastern and Western Hemispheres.

A common mix-up is Australia: it is in the Southern and Eastern Hemispheres, but not the Northern or Western. South America crosses the Equator and lies in both latitudinal hemispheres, yet nearly all of it is west of the Prime Meridian. Africa’s unusual position also helps explain its wide range of environments, from the Sahara in the north to tropical rainforests near the Equator and temperate regions farther south.
